Rehearsing your golf swing is definitely important. Especially as a beginner, you’ll want to do it very often without a ball just so that you can get a feel for the continuity of movement from the setup through the takeaway, upswing, downswing, and finally the follow through.

However, rehearsing only helps you improve so much. In order to get a more effective training session in, your club needs to actually make contact with a ball. But whacking balls into the air in your backyard is not recommended (or welcomed by neighbors with breakable windows).
